Boxing dropped the Ball...MMA needs to capitalize
by Grimm » Tue Jun 12, 2012 8:20 pm
So after the long debate over which is better and rivalry between boxing and MMA, the news of one of its top fighters losing on either side was somewhat epic. As MMA has avoided putting together a Superfight facing Anderson Silva against either George St. Pierre or Jon Bones Jones, the boxing has its failure to launch. Boxing has Manny Pacquiao on one side and Floyd Mayweather on the other, literally it is the situation. The situation is the same in MMA and Professional Boxing with neither fully committing to the fight their fans want. Instead the powers that be continue to sell the fights they see fit. Where the differences end is actually occurrences that are under deep suspension. Manny Pacquiao went into a fight a heavy favored fighter and the betting crowd were in for a treat turned shocked. Timothy Bradley was outclassed for the better part of 12 rounds and it was just a stepping stone to the procrastinating boxing community to avoid booking the Superfight. It was to the amazement of the fans when the split decision was announced, Bradley was announced the winner and before the buzz could settle...the rematch was announced and even included a date. Suspicious I'd say. MMA needs to capitalize om this. The thing is how they refuse to book a SuperFight but instead book A rematch for Chael Sonnen after he was flagged for a suspicious prefight test. What is the counter move the UFC needs to do in order to advance their place in Sports fans pockets and opinions of supremacy? MMA don't drop the ball, RUN WITH IT!

Tough call Grimm. Boxing has been overshadowed by corruption for many years and yet the fan base always turns out for the so called 'Super fights'. Having said that, each time the ball is dropped, the credibility and popularity of the sport loses some it's shine. Boxing has been on the block for a very very long time, thus it's demise will be a slow and lengthy process. The recent Pac man disgrace is one more nail in the coffin. MMA in America is the new kid on the block and is still experiencing it's own growing pains....such as roid issues, poor judging and a few nut sack ref's who have no business being there.
The question is, "Do we want to emulate boxing or find our own path to success in MMA?". One thing is for certain good sir, if the fans insist upon it (repeatedly), it can and will happen.
This is such a young sport and perhaps baby steps are required to insure that we get it right in the end and do not follow the missteps that boxing has repeatedly taken.
Keep up the good work Grimm. You are the lone soldier of mma 'round here these days.

Boxing is the animal that won't die. Things like Mike Tyson biting Holyfield's ear and a fighter trying to break another fighters arm are sideshow stunts compared to the deaths associated with being in the ring. If these things didn't stop the sport nothing will. The positive of MMA is it has the UFC working with the sanctioning bodies to keep thing like the scorecards situations from happening less often. The same can't be said about boxing, multiple hands have a stake in the outcome of the fights, where they happen and which networks get the rights to the fights. Some Boxing promoters work strictly with certain boxers and avoid Co-promotion.

IMO the best thing mma could do doesn't involve a fight at all, rather the implementation of a new scoring system or a new judging credential that had to be met before you could be appointed an mma judge.
I mean we have the same idiots who can't even score a fight conducted using only your hands, how are we supposed to think they can remotely even understand the use of kickboxing, muay thai, wrestling, and brazilian juijitsu?

Im personally in favor of having judges and referees all have to be certified by big jon mcarthys mma schools standards that way they will all be qualified and knowledgeable in all aspects of mma.
also as far as scoring i have heard alot of buzz on the open judging system where at the end of each round the judges reveal there scores it has both its good and bad points what do you guys think??
The major flaws in the 10 point must system to me is the winner receives ten and the loser receive 9 or less points, often resulting in draws and you have to damn near kill a guy in a round to get a 10/8 round.Basically rounds are hard to sore even if a guy is out pointed almost all the round if he manages a little offense its a 10/9 round if its a super close but a guy just edges out the other its still 10/9.
IMO i like the HALF point system if your not familiar i will explain a little
It is a scoring system based on breaking the scoring down to half-points, where a close round, a solid win, a dominant win and having the opponent on the verge of defeat could all be differentiated.
Under this system, if a fighter wins a round that's difficult to call, it gets scored 10/9.5. When it's clear that one fighter won the round, it's 10/9. When a fighter dominates the round but doesn't have his opponent in bad shape during the round, or if a fighter does major damage but the opponent gets a degree of offense in, that would be a 10/8.5. A 10/8 round or lower would be similar to how things are scored today.

I checked the status of the ProBoxing excuse makers. Now they are saying that the two judges that scored the fight wrong are in their seventies. Then they have booked Pac Man in a fight with the same guy for the 4th time rather than granting a rematch for the fight that was scored wrong
