Usually the when the UFC makes a announcement about main event, they usually announce who the two fighters are, but when the UFC announced that UFC 149 in Calgary, they made the odd move of announcing the main event of the evening would be Jose Aldo defending his belt, but they never matched him up with a contender, they just said he would headline the event when the UFC visited Calgary on March 21st to make the event official.
Speaking with tatame.com, Andre Pederneiras said:
“The fight is confirmed for this date, but I don’t have a clue about the name”“I have no idea, but there are like five, six names… We’re waiting for anyone, but it’s not confirmed”
It has been speculated that Hatsu Hioki is likely going to be the opponent, but two other names have also been rumored to be possible contenders too, namely Justin Poirer and Chan Sung Jung who are the main event at the UFC on FX 3 card on May 3rd, the winner of that match may likely be the one who gets a shot at Aldo. Barring any injuries, there would be plenty of time in between events for the victor to prepare for Aldo.
