While the dust settles from last nights fights and the UFC's decsion yesterday to pull Alistair Overeem from his title fight with Junior Dos Santos, likely due to the issues created from Overeem's suspicious 14:1 T/E levels, The UFC decided not to wait for the outcome of Alistair Overeem's NSAC hearing on April 24th, and decided to drop Frank Mir into Overeem's slot on the card.
However that decsion has now left Cain Velasquez without an opponent for the upcoming UFC 146 card. At first it was Roy Nelson who was rumored to be stepping in for Mir, but as it turns out, that was purely speculation.
UFC President Dana White revealed the news via his Twitter account today:
“Don’t believe any of the BS you read on the internet, Cain is fighting Bigfoot Silva May 26th in Vegas.” White tweeted.
Silva was already set to face off against Roy Nelson at UFC 146, but now most of the main card may need to be shuffled to accommodate the changes.
Silva gets bumped up to a contender fight now, where the winner will likely be the next in line for a shot at the title.
Nelson however seems to be the odd man out right now as he has been left without an opponent for the time being, so the question now is, will the UFC move another fighter on the UFC 146 card into that slot, or will they search outside for an idle heavyweight? With 5 weeks to go before the fight, there is plenty of time to get someone to step in and still have a fair amount of time to prepare.
