Former UFC heavyweight champion and known as one of the best submission artist in the heavyweight division Frank Mir although seemingly unimpressed with the ground game of Dos Santos says that he will strike with the current champ and devastating knockout artist more than others have wanted to in the past.
“The only footage I saw (of his ground game) was on YouTube from five years ago and it was his only loss. It was like a two-minute fight in Brazil where he got armbarred.”
Mir said via Ocregister.com.
“I’m going to go ahead and strike with him, probably more than Carwin wanted to and some of these other guys and try to lull him into lowering his striking defense. If I get him into a rhythm where it’s a boxing match, it will be easier to shoot or take him down. If you are shooting right of the bat and are grabbing a leg and that person’s waiting for it, it’s like any combat tactic. It’s very easy to stop what you are expecting.”
It is an interesting game plan and a risky one for the BJJ black-belt as he may attempt to strike with the current UFC champ Junior Dos Santos, who has knocked out 10 of his 14 opponents. With all five of Frank Mir's losses coming by way of knockout it is likely that Mir will spend less time on the feet as possible although getting JDS to the ground is not an easy task the crafty submission artist knows where he needs the fight to win.
