UFC on FOX 4: Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua vs. Brandon Vera as Main Event

brandon vera win

With main event fighter Brian Stann being forced out of his fight with Hector Lombard on the UFC on FOX 4 card due to an injury, The UFC had to scramble to find another good opponent for Lombard or scrap the main event altogether and look for a replacement fight.

Well it appears that the UFC took option number 2 and have scrapped the main event fight for the time being and are now replacing it with 'Shogun' Rua vs. Brandon Vera.
Vera is also replacing another injured fighter, Thiago Silva.

With the loss of Thiago Silva, the UFC decided to pull Rua from the UFC 149 card in Calgary and placed him with Vera.

Vera has had a fairly unsuccessful run in the UFC over the last couple of years, and at one point he was actually released from the UFC after losing to the same fighter he's replacing, Thiago Silva, lucky for Vera though, Silva later tested positive for PED's, and as a result his loss was overturned to a no contest. In light of the NSAC's ruling, the UFC decided to bring him back for another chance. Vera returned to action against Eliot Marshall at UFC 137 where he won via unanimous decision.

This could be a decent fight considering both fighters backgrounds in Muay Thai, but it's not nearly as intriguing as the Thiago Silva vs. Rua match-up. This is a great fight for Vera but is a step down for Rua. A loss to Vera could severely damage his chances of contending again.

Vera was set to face James Te Huna at an upcoming FUEL TV event, and the UFC says they will name Vera's replacemnet shortly.

What the UFC have decided to do with Hector Lombard has not been revealed.
