Jamie Varner has been handed another solid opportunity to show the UFC and the fans that he’s finally turned his career around and his game by stepping in for the injured Terry Etim against Joe Lauzon at UFC on FOX 4.
Varner returned to the UFC with a bang only last month where he wrecked top prospect Edson Barboza at UFC 146, a win that stunned everyone who was watching.
After going winless in 4 fights in the WEC and getting his walking papers, Varner had become a veteran of the regional circuit, where he struggled with his motivation to keep on fighting or to just give up on his dream and go back to schoo. In his second fight outside of the WEC, he was completely handled by a very average Dakota Cochrane for 3 full rounds at Titan Fighting Championships 20, the loss was a major low point for the once WEC star.
Since that loss Varner has seemed to find his stride again, winning 2 fights in a row against solid veterans Nate Jolly and Drew Fickett. The wins got him a call from the UFC who were in desperate need of a last minute replacement after Evan Dunham was forced out of his fight with Edson Barboza. That was the big break he needed.
Now Varner has his second fight lined up, and again he’s replacing another injured fighter, this time though he will need to prove to everyone he is back and for real, and that his surprise win against Barboza was not just a fluke.
UFC on FOX 4: Shogun vs. Vera is set to take place August 4 2012, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
