So the odd news of Anderson Silva's management team downgrading Chris Weidman and Hector Lombard as true contenders worthy of fighting welterweight Champion Anderson Silva next, and then saying that Luke Rockhold deserves the shot next, took most of us by surprise.
At first I thought Silva's team was just having fun with the media, well, because they can. But as it turns out they were serious. Why Silva's team would want to fight someone who can't fight him even if he wanted to because they are in different organizations just makes you scratch your head and wonder what Silva's team is really up to. It just made no sense.
Agreed Weidman is really good, but he hasn't truly fought enough to earn that shot, he needs more experience before he can get that shot. But Lombard? if he destroys Boetsch, then he deserves the shot. Anderson Silva's team is simply not being fair. After all, Silva was given a title shot in only his second fight in the UFC, and he only beat Chris leben to get that shot, a shot that Rich Franklin granted regardless of Silva being virtually unknown to UFC fans or having any octagon experience save for his fight against Leben.
The champs team has a very selective memory it appears. Here's the twitter conversation where Dana white simply says "no" to the possible Silva vs. Rockhold fight.
