During a recent edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, MMA journalist Dave Meltzer had spoken to some executives at the UFC who revealed to him a few possibilities that could play themselves out in the future, most likely to be sometime next year.
The report comes from the folks at mmamania.com. The rumor is, is that Anderson Silva is considering vacating his middleweight title and will drop down to welterweight to challenge Georges St. Pierre.
This could be a good way of sorting out who the #1 middleweight contender log jam if Silva vacates his title. Also, this move would certainly make the already talent rich welterweight division much more competitive with the talent that is already there. I'm sure the guys who are trying to get a crack at the welterweight champ would be less than happy to hear that Anderson Silva is moving in and setting up shop in their division.
As far as this goes, this rumor will go up next to the Jon Jones moving to heavyweight rumor. We shall wait and see. For now though, Silva looks like he's going to have to wait until next year to face GSP if he doesn't drop down, so he may as well take another fight while he waits for GSP vs. Condit to work itself out.
