Chael Sonnen wasted no time starting up the same ol’ personal attack techniques he used on Anderson Silva to get himself a title fight, it’s a smart tactic, when used once, but it’s now a tired one, a very played out tactic. Sonnen got his 2 title shots and lost twice, now that he’s been chased out of the middleweight division, he’s set his sights on Jon Jones, and of course has wasted no time in launching his first verbal attack.

last night on the TV show “UFC Tonight”  Sonnen jumped on Jones, firing the first salvo at the light heavyweight champion.

While discussing his move to 205, Sonnen said: 

"Sure I could go up to 205 and I could take Jon Jones’ belt away, the same as I could take his candy on Halloween. He’s a little punk kid, I could snatch it away all I want, but there’s something to be said in sportsmanship for earning your shot, and on the 29th of December, I’m going to go through Forrest to do it.” Said Sonnen about Jones.

Jones took to his Twitter today to respond to Sonnen.

“The things you say about me hold absolutely no weight, You disrespected Anderson (Silva) and his country, but fought like a child.”

“If you’re going to disrespect me out of nowhere, at least disrespect me to my face like a man,” said Jones. “And you call me a punk. I’m more man than you’ll ever be.” #cheater #coward

And of course not to sit idly by, Sonnen then responded: 

“Oh I plan to. By the way, how long did it take your parents to come up with your name, Jon Jones”

“Advice to Jon Jones. Take some of that Nike money, hire new writers.” Sonnen said.

So Jones then replied: 

“Dude, you’re not worth my time, earn a title shot instead of trying to talk your way into one and I’ll be glad to hurt you.” Said Jones. 

Then of course Sonnen had to get the last word in: 

“Boarding plane to Oregon now, home of your corporate wage masters, next time you are in town, knock on my door. Don’t drive.” said Sonnen

For a Chael Sonnen comeback, that last remark was fairly weak. Sonnen is obviously trying to jump the line to get a crack at Jones, but the reality is, he has a virtual murderers row of light heavyweights he’ll need to fight through to get a crack at the champ.

So no amount of talking is going to get Sonnen into that title fight, unless everyone gets injured, so Sonnen is going to need to earn it, and beating Forrest Griffin will only move him in the right direction, but beating Forrest definitely won’t buy him a title shot.

Fighting someone like Griffin who just doesn't seem to care about fighting anymore and doesn't seem to take his work seriously anymore, isn't much of a victory.  But it is one that Sonnen will find a personal victory within if he does beat Griffin, as Sonnen lost to Griffin way back 2003 in the IFL via, you guessed it, triangle choke...
