On Saturday Night at the post UFC 156 press conference lightweight contender Anthony Pettis sent a text to Dana White saying he'd like to fight Jose Aldo Next and was willing to drop down to 145 lbs to do it. At the time Pettis vs. Aldo wasn't even a thought, but when the UFC president received Pettis' text, all that changed.
Dana White liked the match-up so much he actually put the fight together, so it's on, Anthony Pettis will now be officially challenging Jose Aldo for his featherweight belt on August 6th 2013 at an yet to be named event in a yet to be named venue and city.
Dana white told USA Today:
"Two of the baddest dudes in the fight business are going to fight at 145 pounds. These guys are two of the most amazing, gravity-defying athletes in the sport. I am so pumped for this fight."
Pettis stunned crowds in his return after over a year off with his performance a couple of weeks ago against Donald Cerrone, utterly destroying Cerrone in highlight reel fashion at UFC on FOX 6. Pettis says he usually only cuts 2 pounds to make 155 and dropping to 145 should be very easy.
Pettis told the MMA Hour on Monday:
"I'm tired of waiting, man," Pettis admitted on Monday's edition of The MMA Hour. "I'm just tired of getting passed up. Who knows what happens in the lightweight fight. Who knows what injuries are going to occur and how long that's going to take.
"I was in the same position twice. I was there, I was the next guy in line, and it all depends on who the UFC wants to see fight. That's what it's all about. I think it's who sell the tickets, who can sell the pay-per-views, and who do the fans want to see fight."
Aldo who has now won 15 in a row is fresh off his 5 round battle with Frankie Edgar where he defeated the ex-lightweight champion via a somewhat decisive unanimous decision, the fight was close, but Aldo was the clear winner according to the judges and Dana White.
